Project description
Płock is one the biggest towns in the Mazowieckie voivodships, but it also has the highest percentage of social assistance recipients in the region (c. 10 per cent) – about 5.5 thousand families are in the care of the Municipal Social Welfare Centre. Majority of them are dysfunctional families and families at risk of double exclusion – economic and social. Frequent problems are alcoholism and lack of motivation for finding a job.
The parents’ problems are directly linked to lack of interest in the lives of their children, who spend their free time in the backyard and do not participate in organized afterschool activities. Municipal police in Płock notifies growing number of vandalism acts caused by youth, young people drinking alcohol in public and their disorderly conduct.

The aim of the project was to develop social competences of young people at risk of exclusion in Płock through getting them interested in sport and getting them involved in regular activities in a sports club. Thanks to the project implementation, 30 children aged 7-13, who had never participated in afterschool activities and were not able to take part in them, started to attend sporting activities conducted by trainers of Wisła Płock – one of the best handball clubs in Poland. What is more, thanks to participating in the training sessions, some participants became students of the secondary school sports class.

Streetworkers were regularly helping the project participants. Children took part in handball training sessions, three handball tournaments were organized. A model of cooperation on the local level for getting young people involved in the activities of sports clubs was developed. The project beneficiaries were children and youth aged 7-13, recipients of day-care centres support in Płock.

The “Grant Fund for Płock” Foundation, one project partner, was responsible for co-organising the streetworking component of the project. The other partner, Handball Section of Wisła Płock, organised sports activities for children and ensured continuation of the project activities.
